COURSE POLICY

You are responsible for all material presented in the lectures, homework, and assigned reading. Because astronomy is a rapidly changing field, material will be presented in class that is not contained in the text. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have concerning any area of astronomy at any time!

Attendance is important, and a daily roll will be taken.  You may have four absences with no penalty, but you will be penalized 2 percentage points for every absence over four.  At the end of the semester, if you have four absences or less, you will receive 5 extra percentage points.

Careful attention should be given to the homework assignments, which stress some of the important topics of each chapter. Answers to each week's homework assignment will be posted on the course website. The homework is due at the beginning of class.  Late homework will be accepted for half credit only if it is turned in not more than one week late.

An extra credit observing project may be done for up to ten (10) bonus percentage points. A list of observing projects will be handed out, and you may choose any project that interests you. Because these projects may take a month or longer to complete, you must turn in your Observing Project Contract by March 20. The completed project is due in my office by 5:00 p.m. on the last day of class (April 24).

A Constellation Quiz will be included with the final exam. You should be able to recognize and identify the following constellations:

Andromeda  Cygnus  Scorpius
Bootes  Lyra  Taurus
Canis Major  Orion  Ursa Major
Cassiopeia  Pegasus  Ursa Minor
Corona Borealis  Sagittarius  Pleiades (star cluster)
     Hyades (star cluster)

Academic dishonesty on any exam, homework, or project will result in a grade of zero. A second violation will constitute failure of the course.

Any student requiring accommodations or services due to a disability must contact Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) in room 181 of the Student Service Center. SSD can also arrange to provide course materials (including this syllabus) in alternative formats if necessary.
