Energy Project Grading Rubric

Each group will have 10 minutes to present their ‘solution’ to the ‘House of Representatives’ (i.e. the rest of the class). All of your presentation materials (Power Point files, videos, overheads, whatever) should be in my hands by 5 pm on Friday, April 22^nd, so that I can get ‘em ready to go.

The talk should break down approximately this way:

• 2 min: Basic physics: how does it work? Where does the energy come from? How is it transformed into a useful form? For example, the solar energy group will need to explain about photo-cells, and how they work, etc.
• 2 min: What does the solution look like: What kinds of changes need to be made to implement this solution more thoroughly? For example, the hydrogen car group will need to explain about the transformation of gasoline filling stations to fuel cell distribution centers, or hydrogen fueling stations, etc.
• 2 min: Random points in favor (renewable, non-polluting, cheap, whatever)
• 2 min: Random points opposed (non-renewable, polluting, expensive, whatever)
• 2 min: Questions and Answers: Leave two minutes at the end for questions from the class or the professor

The scoring will be as follows:

• 20% Self- and group-evaluation: Every person will grade themselves and the others in their group. 20% of your grade will come from the average of these grades.
• 35% Background Preparation: How thorough was your presentation? Did you consider the pros and cons appropriately? Did you cover all of the most pertinent relevant physics?
• 25% Quality of Presentation: Did you put this together at the last minute, or did you think hard about the best way to present the material?
• 10% Q and A: Were you prepared to handle questions about the topic, which may wander somewhat from your prepared material. This is a second way to judge the depth of your preparation.
• 10% House rating: Each student will rate your presentation, and you will rate the presentations of everyone else. 5% of this is from the ratings others give you, and 5% is from the ratings you give others. (See next page.)
