2002 ANNUAL MEETING FOR OAS OFFICERS IS SET FOR THIS MONTH

The "Annual" meeting of the Ogden Astronomical Society will be held next Thursday September 12, 2002 in the Ott Planetarium on the campus of Weber State University. The time will be 7:30 p.m.

This meeting will see the member's selection of a new slate of club officers. Three of the four Executive Committee members over the past years will not be on this year's ballot. The new nominees for F.Y 2002 - 2003 are identified below. Every member is needed at this meeting. Your vote is important. Please participate.

In addition to the elections, at this Annual meeting will be a discussion on the purchase of a SolarMax Hydrogen Alpha Filter and Telescope from Coronado. We will also discuss purchasing an OIII (O is for Oxygen) filter for B.O.B. and a 1.25" Hydrogen Beta filter that we can all share. For those that are not familiar with the filters, an OIII is a "Nebula" filter, the H Beta is for dark nebulas like the Horsehead and the H Alpha is a solar filter that allows us to see prominences and flares. See you Thursday.

Dave Dunn, President

TWO STAR PARTIES SCHEDULED BEFORE THE OCTOBER MEETING

The next-to-the-last star party on Antelope Island is set for Saturday September 7. If you haven't taken the opportunity to make one of these unique events yet this year, come on out. The seeing is fine and the weather has been great. [You can view the full press release too.]

Also, the second slide show and star party at the Ogden Valley (Huntsville) Branch of the Weber County Library is scheduled for Wednesday October 9th. The slide show will begin in the auditorium at 7:00 p.m. followed by the star party. The telescopes are set up in the school yard just across the street from the library. The library is located at 131 So. 7400 E. (That's just a block north of the Shooting Star Bar and Grill).

TREASURER

And here is what they have to say; For President:

Thanks for your confidence in me. I don't want to be merely a caretaker president. I would like to infuse new enthusiasm, increase membership, and reach out more to our community if I were OAS president.

I know that there are many long term members who really care about our group would be supportive of me or whoever became our next president. With that kind support, and knowing that I already have put my first year of teaching behind me, I would very much like to submit my name as a nominee for OAS president.

Wayne Sumner

It has been a pleasure being vice-president these past two years and I would like to thank everyone for the support you have given me. I have enjoyed my association with the club members and working with the executive committee has been great. If elected president, I would continue with the great work previously accomplished by David Dunn, hopefully with topics at meetings that are interesting to all and a generous supply of Star Partes, both public and private. Thanks again for your support,

Lee Priest

... for Vice President:

I would like to see if there is a way we can generate more interest in Astronomy by offering some type of "beginning Astronomy" class which would offer help in determining the proper telescope for your purposes; help in identifying the Stars, galaxies, and constellations; something for the beginner to help them get started. Perhaps with additional interest from those out there who don't know in what direction to go we could increase club membership

I am looking forward to the election in September and hope we have a large turnout.

Kay Hargis

I have been a member of OAS for over 10 years and during that time I have very much enjoyed the preparation, effort and guidance of the many able officers of the club. I have set back and learned from the presentations, demonstration and activities they have brought to us.

I now feel that it is now time that I attempt to add my efforts to carrying this load. I would feel honored to be considered for the office of Vice President.

If elected it is my intentions to try and make all roads run downhill, regardless of the direction traveled, and every night be clear with good seeing. (The preceding sentence was thrown in to emulate the political statements that I have seen from those running for office - not OAS)

Cliff Peterson

... for Secretary:

It just doesn't seem possible for anyone to fill Bob's shoes as Secretary of the OAS. In fact, we ought to re-elect him as a write-in, even if he doesn't choose to run! How can anyone hope to measure up to the job he's done?

However, if you are misguided, desperate, and foolish enough to elect me, I'll do my best.

Jim Seargeant

... and for Treasurer:

I would be proud to serve as the OAS Treasurer for another year. I have enjoyed my tenure in this office and look forward to another exciting year. Also, members would be wise to sustain me as the club Treasurer because I am the only one who knows where the money is stashed.
