OCTOBER'S MEETING WILL BE A SPECIAL EVENT THIS YEAR

The regular October meeting of the Ogden Astronomical Society will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Ott Planetarium on the Weber State University campus this Thursday October 11, 2001.

We are privileged this month to welcome a very special guest speaker. Nal Morris, a specialist in archeoastronomy will present a program describing, through pictures, the Parowan Gap petroglyphs. Mr. Morris has a background in physics and computer science. He has been fascinated for many years with the relationship between the changing seasons, the sun, the moon and the rock art around Parowan Gap. Through stories, Morris will describe the fascinating culture of the Fremont people and how they used the sky in their lives.

An extensive article about Nal Morris was run in the Ogden Standard Examiner last Thursday and a larger than usual crowd is anticipated at this meeting. It is advisable to come early for a seat.

An update from former SLAS President, Lowell Lyon, on the Astronomical League's planned National Convention is also planned.

FINAL ANTELOPE ISLAND STAR PARTY IS PLANNED

Saturday October 20 will be the final Antelope Island public star party for this year. There will be a four-day moon which will be perfect to viewing and Mars remains high in the sky along with Uranus for those wishing a slightly more difficult challenge.

The gate onto the island closes at 9:00 p.m. but the automatic gate allows exit at any time. Members should try to have their equipment assembled before Dr. Sohl begins the slide presentation. The Fall chill is now in the air so coats and jackets are in order. In the event of overcast the star party will be canceled.

The OAS Treasurer, Doug (Moneybags) Say is urging all members to bring their $12.00 annual dues to this Thursday's meeting. For members who have not re-newed their membership by the first of November, this will be your final issue of the club newsletter. Also, for those members subscribing to Astronomy magazine the renewal of your subscription is due.
