MINUTES

OGDEN ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

April 4, 1998

The April 1998 meeting of the Ogden Astronomical Society was called to order by club President Steve Peterson at 7:30 p.m. The Antelope Island star party, scheduled for April 4, was rained out. The next one is scheduled for May 30. Steve noted that the park service closed the gates at 7:00 p.m. which is a problem for people attempting to reach White Rock Bay.

The Mound Fort Middle School star party, set for April 4, also rained out but has been rescheduled for April 30.

Members reported that the Star Diagonal is being received in good condition.

Steve announced that a gentleman by the name of Ziggy has crown and flint blanks for astronomical refractors. More information is available for anyone interested.

Deloy and Karen Pierce announced information relating to the Grand Canyon star party scheduled for June 13 through 20 this year. Also, Deloy is selling red LED night lights.

The video "For All Mankind" was shown.

At 9:00 p.m. the meeting adjourned. The usual rap session ensued. RLT

Elgie's Picture of the Month

The Moon is a particularly interesting object to view, especially at public star parties. That is one reason so many of this year's public events have been scheduled around a phase of the Moon. The two images below are of the southern section of the Moon, near First Quarter. Figure 1 is a .01 seconds exposure taken on April 2, 1998 at 21:18:45 hours. Figure 2 was a .01 second exposure taken the same night at 21:22:35 hours.
