Colliding Cars and "Rocket" Balloon

Cars of various masses and bumpers are allowed to collide on a level air track, and a rocket car and a rocket balloon are demonstrated.

Equipment
  • Air track
  • Air track cars of the same mass, different masses, and different bumpers
  • Rocket balloon car
  • Rocket balloon

Description

Cars of various masses and bumpers are allowed to collide in pairs on a level air track. Also, small "rocket" balloons are demonstrated to show the action and reaction forces in Newton's third law.

Roller Board

A person standing on a roller board pushes against the wall or pushes or pulls against another person.

Equipment
  • Roller board

Description

A person stands on a rectangular board which has roller skate wheels attached. As the person pushes away from a fixed wall, or pushes (or pulls) on another person, the forces of action and reaction are demonstrated.

Car on Road

A car accelerates on a surface which is capable of moving.

Equipment
  • Remote control car
  • A long wooden track
  • Steel roller rods
Description

A remote-control car is set to accelerate while on a movable surface. As the movable surface pushes the car forward, the car pushes the surface backward and sets it in motion. Also, as the car brakes to a stop, the surface is pushed forward by the car, while the surface pushes backward on the braking car.
